Dust, small particles, chemical splashes, sparks, intense radiation, and debris flying from tools pose a threat in various work environments.

Proper selection of protective eyewear is one important way to mitigate these risks. However, not all protective eyewear is the same — the specific model must match the work process, environment, and anticipated hazards.

In this guide, we will discuss the types of eye protection available, how to choose the appropriate model, and what mistakes to avoid.

Why is eye protection important?

During work, a particle hazardous to the eye can appear unexpectedly and quickly reach the face area. The risk is particularly high in jobs involving cutting, grinding, drilling, or welding equipment.

Hazards to the eye may include:

Dust and fine particles;

Wood, metal, stone, or plastic debris;

Chemical liquid splashes;

Sparks and hot particles;

Gas, vapor, and aerosol;

Ultraviolet and infrared radiation;

Intense light;

Biological fluid splashes;

Wind and solid particles present in the environment.

Ordinary, everyday glasses are not designed to protect against such hazards. In the workplace, appropriate, properly marked protective equipment must be used.

Selection begins with risk assessment

Before choosing protective eyewear, the specific work process must be assessed.

It is important to determine:

What type of hazard exists;

From where a particle or liquid might come;

At what speed the particle moves;

Whether only the eyes or the entire face needs protection;

Whether chemical substances are used;

Whether there is a risk of dust, gas, or vapor;

Whether the work involves radiation;

Whether the employee needs to wear other protective equipment as well.

Protective eyewear is personal protective equipment and cannot replace other measures for controlling workplace hazards. The workplace must first be made as safe as possible through technical and organizational measures, and protective equipment should provide additional protection.

Main types of protective eyewear

Open-type safety glasses

Open-type protective glasses visually resemble ordinary glasses, but their lenses and frame are designed for use in a work environment.

Such models can be used for mechanical work where there is a risk of small particles flying from the front or sides.

The glasses must have appropriate side protection or a wrap-around design. Front-only coverage is not always sufficient.

Closed protective eyewear

Closed glasses — also known as goggles — provide more complete coverage around the eyes. They may be necessary in the presence of dust, chemical splashes, aerosols, or particles moving from various directions.

The type of ventilation should also be chosen according to the work hazard. Models with direct ventilation may be comfortable, but they may not always provide sufficient protection against specific chemical splashes, very fine dust, or gas.

Face shield

A face shield covers not only the eyes but a larger part of the face. It may be necessary for chemical liquid splashes, hot particles, sparks, or other high-risk situations.

A shield does not always replace protective eyewear. Depending on the work hazard, it may be necessary to use it in conjunction with closed or open-type safety glasses.

Protection for welding operations

During welding, the eyes are exposed to intense light, ultraviolet and infrared radiation, sparks, and hot particles.

Ordinary clear or sunglasses are unacceptable for such work. Special welding protective equipment with an appropriate filter is required. The filter’s protection level should be selected according to the type of welding, work mode, and manufacturer’s recommendations.

Eyewear for optical glasses users

An employee who wears optical glasses for vision correction can use:

Appropriate prescription protective eyewear;

Protective models designed to fit over optical glasses;

Closed glasses with sufficient space.

The protective equipment should not alter the position of the optical glasses and should not restrict the field of vision.

Which protection corresponds to which hazard?

Work Hazard

Possible Protective Equipment

Small mechanical particles

Safety glasses with side protection

Intense dust

Appropriate closed protective eyewear

Chemical liquid splashes

Closed glasses designed for chemical risks and, if necessary, a face shield

Sparks and hot particles

Appropriate glasses and a face shield

Welding

Special filtered welding mask or glasses

Outdoor work and bright light

Appropriate filtered glasses designed for industrial use

Use of optical glasses

Protective overglasses or prescription safety glasses

These correspondences are general guidelines. The final choice should always be based on a specific job’s risk assessment and the product’s official specifications.

Lens color and purpose

Lens color is not just a design element. Different types of lenses are used for different lighting and work environments.

Clear lens

Clear lenses are mainly used indoors or in conditions of good visibility. They should not obstruct color perception or the viewing of work details.

Tinted or dark lens

Dark lenses may be necessary for outdoor work and in conditions of bright light. However, their use in poorly lit areas will reduce visibility and create additional hazards.

Special filters

Welding, laser equipment, ultraviolet radiation, or other special activities require filters designed for specific hazards.

It is impossible to determine the protection level solely by the lens color. It is essential to check the product marking and technical documentation.

Anti-fog treatment

Fogging of glasses is one of the most common practical problems. It can be caused by:

Rapid temperature changes;

High humidity;

Intense physical activity;

Use with a respirator or mask;

Inadequate ventilation;

Improper fit on the face.

A fogged lens restricts an employee’s visibility and may prompt them to remove their glasses. Therefore, for intense or prolonged work, it is desirable for glasses to have officially specified anti-fog treatment.

It is also important to properly combine glasses, respirators, and other equipment.

Anti-scratch protection

A scratched lens reduces visibility, especially in bright or artificial lighting conditions.

Anti-scratch treatment makes the lens more resistant to daily wear and tear, but it cannot make it completely impervious to damage. Glasses should not be placed lens-down and should be stored in a clean, protected case.

If a scratch falls within the field of vision or distorts the image, the glasses should be replaced promptly.

Comfort and fit on the face

Protective eyewear is effective only when properly fitted and used correctly by the employee throughout the work.

When selecting, check:

Whether it is firmly fixed;

Whether it covers the eyes from the sides;

Whether it slips during movement;

Whether it presses on the nose and ears;

Whether it maintains a full field of vision;

Whether it hinders head movement;

Whether it is comfortable for prolonged use;

Whether it is compatible with helmets, respirators, and hearing protection.

Overly large glasses may be unstable on the face, while very small models may not provide the necessary coverage.

Compatibility with other protective equipment

In the workplace, it is often necessary to use several protective devices simultaneously.

For example:

A helmet should not press on the glasses frame;

The upper part of the respirator should not disrupt the correct positioning of the glasses;

The temples of the glasses should not reduce the isolation of hearing protection earmuffs;

The face shield should move freely and not collide with other equipment.

The comfort of each product individually is not enough — they must also be checked when used together.

Standards and Marking

A product’s appearance cannot determine its actual protective capability.

For professional eye and face protection, the ISO 16321 series of standards is used. EN 166 marked and certified protective eyewear is also widely available on the market.

When selecting, verify:

Manufacturer and product model;

Declaration of conformity;

Applicable standard;

Mechanical protection class;

Lens filter and optical characteristics;

Permissible environment of use;

Care and storage instructions;

Information on production or expiration date, if specified.

The meaning of the marking should be interpreted according to the product instructions and the manufacturer’s official documentation.

Most common mistakes

Using ordinary glasses as protective eyewear

Optical or sunglasses do not automatically constitute professional protective equipment. They may lack sufficient impact resistance and side protection.

Choosing one model for all tasks

Protective eyewear for mechanical particles may be completely unsuitable for chemical splashes or welding radiation.

Using a face shield independently

A shield covers a large part of the face but cannot always provide complete eye isolation. In specific jobs, it may be necessary to wear safety glasses underneath it.

Removing fogged glasses

If glasses frequently fog up, the problem should be resolved by improving the appropriate model, ventilation, fit, and compatibility with other equipment.

Using damaged lenses

Scratched, cracked, deformed, or opaque lenses reduce visibility and may no longer provide the necessary protection.

Choosing based solely on price or design

Inexpensive or visually appealing glasses are not always suitable for a specific job. The main criterion should be protection appropriate to the existing hazard.

Care and Storage

Protective eyewear should be inspected before each use.

Pay attention to:

Scratches and cracks on the lens;

Deformation of the frame;

Loose parts;

Damaged temples;

Condition of the elastic band;

Transparency of the lens;

Fixation of the glasses on the face.

Glasses should be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Rough cloth, strong chemical cleaners, or dirty wipes can damage the lens surface and special treatments.

For storage, use a clean pouch or a hard case. Damaged glasses should be replaced promptly.

COFRA Eye Protection for Professional Activities

The Italian brand COFRA produces various lines of professional eye protection. Its assortment includes safety glasses with classic and sporty designs, closed goggles, models designed to fit over optical glasses, welding equipment, and special-purpose products.

Depending on the model, COFRA glasses may include:

Polycarbonate lens;

Wrap-around design;

Side protection;

Anti-fog treatment;

Anti-scratch treatment;

UV protection filter;

Soft nose pad;

Adjustable temples;

Compatibility with optical glasses;

Possibility of combining with other protective equipment.

For example, COFRA’s ARMEX model features a clear polycarbonate lens, anti-fog and anti-scratch treatment, UV400 protection, and a wrap-around design. The manufacturer specifies it for indoor mechanical work in conditions of good visibility.

When selecting a product, the specific model’s purpose, and not just the brand or general category, should always be checked.

Choose eye protection at SafetyHub

SafetyHub offers professional protective eyewear and eye protection solutions for various work environments.

If you are unsure which model suits your activity, SafetyHub’s team will consider the following when assisting with your choice:

Work process;

Mechanical, chemical, and other hazards;

Environment of use;

Required level of protection;

Lens type and color;

Compatibility with other protective equipment;

Intensity of use;

Number of employees;

Company budget.

For corporate clients, it is possible to prepare customized offers, plan quantities, and organize product delivery throughout Georgia.

Safe work begins with clear vision

Eye protection is an important part of an employee’s daily safety.
